Smart Parking

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 15-Apr-2019 15:43:22

The Internet of Things (IoT) is making parking in major cities a lot easier. IoT parking solutions provide information such as available parking spaces to connected users. Information is collected, analysed and personalised for users in real-time. Intelligent parking, as well as traffic monitoring, has helped to reduce congestion and improve traffic mobility, in major cities in Europe such as Barcelona and Madrid.

County councils are investing in technology to help reduce pollution and increase traffic throughput in major cities. Intelligent parking apps are available to keep commuters informed of available parking spaces in their area.

IoT parking solutions offer a few key benefits as follows:

  1. Less time spent in vehicles helps to improve the productivity of commuters and the lower volume of traffic circulating helps to reduce the number of road accidents.
  2. A high volume of vehicles circulating at low speed creates traffic congestion, which contributes to higher levels of gas emissions. More fluid traffic helps to reduce fuel consumption and the build-up of road traffic air pollution.
  3. Parking sensors are autonomous, wireless devices, which are easy to install. Entrance and exit of vehicles in parking spaces and duration of parking is monitored in real-time. Data is sent to an application, so that all users can track free parking spaces efficiently and parking costs are calculated accurately

Migrating Mobile Bases

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 10-Apr-2019 12:12:51

All resellers have customers in contract for mobile services. They want the flexibility of changing suppliers, but not the hassle of changing SIMs in all the devices.

The biggest challenge organisations face is bill shock from employees going over their monthly data allowance, in the UK and abroad. They have no visibility of data usage for their SIM estates until it is too late. Finance Directors are keen to save money, however face the challenge of swapping SIM cards in every employee device for a better deal.

Jola partners are offering their corporate customers the ability to migrate existing Vodafone and O2 SIMs to Jola packages seamlessly. Our SIMs are managed within Mobile Manager and fixed data pools can be allocated so estates can share data. We also send out data usage alerts so partners can manage usage and add backdate-able bolt-ons as required. Our SIM packages are on 30-day terms, so partners can move them to better deals, when they become available.

Mobile data opportunities in transportation and logistics

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 10-Apr-2019 11:57:19

The transportation industry is the second largest segment investing in IoT, spending £75 billion globally last year on monitoring and management. MSPs servicing this industry are providing IoT solutions, which include devices containing un-steered multi-network roaming SIMs, to improve efficiency and safety records in the industry as a whole.

Fleet Management

Monitoring devices are used to provide management teams with real-time data on fuel consumption and regulatory compliance. Critical information is displayed in dashboards for management teams to monitor in real-time and analyse KPIs.

Transit Management

Devices track the exact location of a vehicle and accurately estimate arrival times. Tracking information is gathered in a central system and can be sent to relevant parties.

Smart Inventory Management

Smart inventory management systems analyse real-time data across warehouse distribution centres. By implementing sensors to track stock levels, stock management has been improved leading to more efficient distribution.

Typically, MSPs have partnered with the mobile carriers directly for SIMs, however many have struggled with a lack of flexibility and control.

Jola is proposing an alternative to dealing with mobile carriers directly. We offer a range of competitively-priced mobile data SIMs, including unique products you can’t buy from the carriers directly.

Do you always get the best deal buying direct?

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 20-Mar-2019 11:20:22

Many MSPs and resellers think that they need to buy direct to get the best prices, however in the mobile data market, this is usually not the case. There are also additional downsides such as lack of flexibility and control.

How flexible is your carrier?

Can they deliver a tariff that exactly meets the needs of your customers, or are you making do with an off-the-shelf package?

How easy are the carriers to do business with?

How do you find dealing with multiple in-country carriers? Are you struggling with paper ordering? How do you manage the time differences? Are processes manual?

How much control do you have over your SIM estate?

How do you manage SIM changes within your estate? Can you monitor and manage data usage per site? How do you manage data overage charges?

Issues with your 4G back-up solution?

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 20-Mar-2019 11:04:02

Many MSPs are looking to simplify business infrastructure and reduce operating costs for their multi-sited corporate clients. Often, they provide consultancy services to analyse security risks and propose solutions. 4G back-up is commonly used to back up primary networks to add an extra layer of resilience, however managing 4G has been challenging for the MSP and expensive for the client, until now.

The challenges

The key challenges are dealing with multiple carriers, manual processes, lack of direct control, the high cost of site surveys and monitoring data usage. MSPs won’t know which sites are going to go down and how much 4G data will be used until the primary connectivity is fixed. Corporate clients often complain about data overage charges, they were not expecting post incident, especially if the 4G speeds were slower than expected.

What is a Private APN?

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 12-Mar-2019 10:18:01

A private APN (Access Point Name) is a point of entry onto an IP network for a mobile device. Private APNs allow connections to a corporate network simply and securely over a Private IP address range, without touching the Public Internet. This is done without the need for multiple VPNs, additional hardware and additional overheads.

What are the benefits?

  • Devices are connected to a private network, avoiding the public internet, therefore increasing security. Secure internet break-out options are usually available.
  • Data security is increased as low level malware cannot bypass the APN.
  • Jola’s Private APN is self-built solution within a white label portal, with extensive management tools, so resellers retain complete control.

Security – IoT LTE devices can be configured to use a Private APN. Using a Private APN in conjunction with a Fixed Private IP VPN solution terminating at a customer’s data centre, an organisations' data remains on the customer’s private data network.

Configurability – Private APNs offer customers the ability to configure settings such as IP address ranges, static or dynamic addressing, as well as authentication. No VPN specific hardware or client software is required.

Cost-Effectiveness – Private APNs offer a cost-effective mobile VPN solution which allows deployment of corporate security policies on mobile devices.  It allows fast distribution of routing changes to connections to the LTE network.

Coverage – The EE UK/EU/US M2M SIM allows for access across the UK, Europe and the US.  For VPN applications, it translates into seamless access to all the organisation’s applications and data, conveniently and securely, virtually anywhere in the world.

Will 5G increase revenues for Communications Providers in the channel?

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 07-Mar-2019 11:31:35

According to a recent IDC survey, nearly 80% of Communications Providers expect 5G to generate more revenue opportunities. And 35% say they would be able to grow revenue by 5-10% within the first two years.

What are the likely opportunities?

European operators expect early 5G deployments to enhance existing services, such as unified communications as a service (UCaaS) and software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN).

There is an opportunity for Communications Providers to replace fixed line communications with mobile services. Once 5G is deployed it is predicted to make operational savings of over 10%.

Key sectors to target are healthcare, government and public sector services as well as automotive and manufacturing industries.

How important will choosing the right supplier be?

Choosing the right supplier will be critical to ensure Communications Providers win business in these sectors. Choose a partner who has a wide range of wholesale 5G services, managed within self-service portals, to retain control of 5G assets and monitor and manage data usage. Partners with experience delivering solutions to key vertical markets with a competitive 5G proposition will succeed.

The rise in popularity of 4G Security Cameras

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 07-Mar-2019 11:00:48

4G security cameras are increasing in popularity in remote areas where there is no easy access to power or WiFi, with a strong 4G signal.

4G security cameras, also called 4G LTE security cameras, are mobile monitoring cameras that use the 4G LTE network to deliver live viewing and send instant alerts. Mobile data consumption varies, depending on how many times live streaming is viewed and motion detection alarms are received.

Wireless 4G cameras are now battery and solar powered so are easy to install and move, inexpensive to buy and are easily scalable. Night vision coverage offers clear images during the night.

IT and Security specialists are partnering with key suppliers to put together affordable CCTV packages for rural customers on farms and construction sites to monitor livestock and equipment.

Jola

Jola provides partners with customers in rural areas a wide range of M2M 4G data SIM packages, including cost-effective multi-network roaming packages, controlled within Mobile Manager. 5G, IoT and the channel

Posted by Cherie Howlett on 07-Mar-2019 10:44:48

GSMA published their latest mobile report at the MWC19 this week. According to the report, by the end of 2018, 5.1 billion people around the world subscribed to mobile services, accounting for 67% of the global population.

5G

The report described how 5G is now upon us, bringing with it the promise of a host of exciting new services. As the boundaries between mobile and the wider digital ecosystem continue to blur, and as data monetisation poses a continued challenge, many operators are moving beyond their traditional telco businesses to explore new opportunities in a fast-changing competitive landscape.

IoT

The report predicts that between 2018 and 2025, the number of global IoT connections will triple to 25 billion, while global IoT revenue will quadruple to £0.83 trillion. With connectivity becoming increasingly commoditised, mobile operators are looking to expand their role in the value chain – from providing essential tools and capabilities for ecosystem partners to build IoT solutions, to becoming end-to-end IoT solution providers themselves.

Devices

The report suggests that although smartphones will remain the focal point of the consumer internet economy, the range of connected devices (and therefore internet access channels) is greater than ever. In the most advanced countries, today’s digital consumers (using PCs and smartphones) will likely become tomorrow’s augmented customers, adopting emerging technologies such as AI (via smart speakers) and immersive reality.
