Despite all the hype around cloud telephone systems only around 10% of SMEs are actually using them, according to a recent survey by Swan Independent Research (SIR).
SIR surveyed around 12,000 UK SMEs in areas where a new inexpensive superfast Ethernet is known to be available. 90% of respondents said they were still using a traditional in-house telephone system and 82% said they were satisfied or very satisfied with it. Co-incidentally around 50% were still relying on best-effort broadband as their only connection to the internet, unaware that they can now buy a superfast dedicated leased line for around £200 per month.
For most companies their telephone system is there for them to simply make and receive calls. As long as it doesn’t break down (which they rarely do) they are unaware of the operational and cost advantages of a cloud-based system. More importantly no SME in their right mind is going to try and run their telephone system over broadband and most perceive the alternative, dedicated Ethernet leased lines, to be too expensive.
