Cost-justifying dedicated leased lines with cloud-telephony

Find me on:

Where FTTC or EoFTTC (see earlier blog on connectivity types) are not available to their customer a common question I get from Jola Partners is around Return on Investment (ROI).

Their customer is suffering with slow broadband speeds and poor reliability but a leased line alternative can be 10 times the monthly rental. How to justify it?

Very often the answer is to look at the opportunities that having a fast, dedicated, symmetrical and reliable access to the Internet present. The most obvious is faster web browsing and email and if the customer is sending data between sites they are probably suffering from a slow rate of transfer and constant drops.

The problem is that putting a cost on this is hard and something else is often needed in order to make the upgrade from broadband compelling.

Most of our Partners sell JolaPhone, our cloud-based Broadsoft telephony platform, which only works with a quality IP connection. JolaPhone needs only a small fraction of the bandwidth and because JolaNet comes with Quality of Service (QoS) as standard, all the voice packets are prioritised. Combining JolaPhone and JolaNet in one solution for a customer makes nearly all of their existing communications infrastructure redundant. Consider this example of a typical 14 seat JolaPhone ROI justification:

Existing £ per month   JolaPhone £ per month
Phone system maintenance £150   14 extensions (all UK calls) £210
8 x ISDN lines £160   20Mbs JolaNet Fibre Ethernet £400
UK calls £150
Broadband £40
  £500   £610

So whereas a company may not be able to justify £360 per month more for a faster, more reliable connection, they are probably happy with £110 more.

Plus they can get rid of their legacy PBX and upgrade to the world’s most popular and highly featured hosted telephony platform.

Once the leased line is in you can pull all of those cloud-based proposals out of the drawer.
